On Saturday, October 11 at 3:00 PM, BPL will welcome Bristol native, and Simpsons television series writer, Mike Reiss. Mike, who was a Bristol Public Library user in his school days, and is a major donor to the Friends of the Bristol Public Library, is visiting the library to attend a small dedication ceremony for the new first floor library Express Area. The new Express Area, is designed to support the growing use of digital technology in the community and will include cafe style seating, free WI-FI, tables with charging hubs and USB ports for mobile devices and will be a location inside the library where covered beverages will be permitted. The required furniture and re-furbishing of the first-floor lobby are made possible by Mike’s generous support.
Although the Express Area will not be completed by October 11, the dedication ceremony will include the presentation of a plaque, the signing of Simpsons posters that will be part of the Express Area decor, a display board showing what the new furniture materials will look like, and refreshments courtesy of the Friends of the Bristol Public Library. The public is welcome to attend the dedication.
The Bristol History Room, which houses the local history collection of the Bristol Public Library, will be open monthly on Saturday mornings from 9:30-11:30 AM on the following dates: September 20, October 18, November 15 and December 13. The Bristol History Room collection includes books about Bristol, pictures and postcards, maps, diaries, church and assessor’s records, newspapers on microfilm, cemetery, birth, death and marriage indexes, city directories and yearbooks. There are nearly a hundred historic images of Bristol on permanent display in the local history room and temporary exhibits of pictures of Lake Compounce and objects made at the American Silver Company.
